ARE RENT RECEIPTS MANDATORY FOR HRA EXEMPTION?

This query is : Resolved

Quick Summary
To claim House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption, rent receipts are generally required, as per CBDT Circular 4/2020. However, if obtaining receipts is difficult, such as when the landlord is an NRI, alternative proofs like a rent agreement, bank statements showing rent payments, or a declaration can be accepted. This is especially relevant when annual rent exceeds one lakh rupees, requiring evidence to be submitted.
