instead of wasting time on wondering how to do this, you can download the pdf version of the return you filed from the tax website and refill the excel sheet using the details provided in the pdf file

Converting XML of ITR back into the exact macro-enabled Excel form issued by the Income Tax Department isn’t straightforward because the Excel ITR forms are specially designed with macros and validations, and there’s no official tool from IT Dept that converts XML to macro-enabled Excel form directly. But here are some practical approaches:
1. Use the Official Income Tax E-Filing Website The IT Department’s e-filing portal allows you to upload your XML file and then you can download the filled Excel (or PDF) form again. Go to: https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ Login → e-File → Upload XML of ITR → After successful upload, you can download the filled form (Excel or PDF). This method is usually the easiest to get back the data-filled Excel (macro-enabled) form. 2. Manual XML Import (If You Have Excel Skills) You can open XML in Excel via Data → From XML (depending on Excel version). But this imports raw data and you will lose all the macros, formatting, and validation present in the original ITR form. You can create a new sheet, import XML there, and then copy the values to the official macro-enabled Excel template you download fresh from the Income Tax site. This is somewhat technical and tedious for multiple returns. 3. Backup Habit for the Future Always keep backup of macro-enabled Excel form before submission. Save XML separately as you did. When the original form is lost, use the above method (portal upload and download) to get it back.
