In cases where the bank has mentioned the wrong TAN on the challan and it’s been over 3 months, it indeed becomes difficult to get the correction done directly through the bank or TIN facilitation center, as they generally allow correction within a limited time. Here’s what you can do next:
1. File a Refund Claim with the Bank or TIN NSDL Since the payment was made against a wrong TAN, the amount would be credited to someone else’s account. You should file a refund claim with the bank or through the TIN NSDL portal, explaining the mistake. Attach the proof of payment, correct TAN, and a letter explaining the issue. 2. Approach the Assessing Officer (AO) or Jurisdictional Income Tax Department Inform the AO about the wrong TAN payment and submit all supporting documents. The AO can help adjust or transfer the amount to the correct TAN account or provide a refund order. This process may take time but is often necessary when the bank can’t correct the challan. 3. File TDS Return with Correct TAN While the refund process is ongoing, ensure that in your TDS return you mention the correct TAN. Also, inform your deductors or entities involved about the correct TAN to avoid future mistakes. 4. Preventive Measures Always verify TAN carefully before making payments. Keep all challan and bank receipts safely for quick reference.
