Where to write the question number in exam

When we write a answer in exam, where to write a question number? Above the margin i.e on the top most blank space or below the margin i.e on the top first line or left hand side on the margin. I am not too sure, I got lot of opinion from my friends, but it puzzled...
Can any one help me in this regard stating clearly the solution...

15 March 2012 on the very First line after margin it is to b highlightend with a rectangular bracket surrounding it.
