Please tell me Why we write &co. in case of properietory firm. for e.g.xyz & co.
or xyz & Associates ? What is it ? Whether it is compulsory ? Does it require any registration ?

The phrase "& Co" and "& Associates" are used alike "The" in English.
Whenever The is used it means it is defined somewhere already.
Whenever & Co and & Asso. is used it means these are business organisations.
It is not compulsory that whenever you run a business; you must use these words.
No registration is necessary to use these particular phrase at the time of selection of name of the firm/enterprise.
