02 June 2017 List of exempt Services in Services tax is going to continue in GST

26 July 2025 Sure! Hereโ€™s a straightforward overview of **GST rates and related info** in India as of 2017โ€“2018, to help you understand better:

---

### 1. **GST Rate Slabs in India**

GST in India has **four main rate slabs**:

| Rate | Description | Examples |
| ------- | ---------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| **0%** | Exempted goods and services | Fresh vegetables, milk, education, healthcare |
| **5%** | Essential items & services | Edible oils, sugar, spices, coal, domestic LPG |
| **12%** | Mid-level goods and services | Processed food, computers, cell phones |
| **18%** | Standard rate | Most goods and services โ€” telecom, FMCG, financial services |
| **28%** | Luxury and sin goods | Luxury cars, tobacco products, aerated drinks |

---

### 2. **Are there Negative Lists or Exemptions?**

* Unlike **Service Tax** which had a negative list of services not taxable, GST works differently.
* GST has a **list of exempt goods and services** (0% rate or NIL rated). These are basically goods/services you donโ€™t pay GST on.
* There is no negative list as such, but certain goods and services are outside the GST net (like alcohol for human consumption, petroleum products).

---

### 3. **Additional Notes**

* GST subsumes various taxes like VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, etc.
* **Input Tax Credit (ITC)** is allowed on GST paid for business purchases.
* GST is divided into **CGST (Central GST)** and **SGST (State GST)** for intra-state supplies, and **IGST (Integrated GST)** for inter-state supplies.

---

### 4. **Where to find the official GST rate chart?**

* The government updates GST rates regularly.
* You can check the latest GST rates and HSN codes on the official **CBIC website**: [https://cbic.gov.in/](https://cbic.gov.in/)

---

If you want, I can prepare a detailed, easy-to-understand chart tailored for your business or specific goods/services. Just let me know!
