Surrender of service tax code(stc) number

13 October 2011 I have an old Service Tax Code(STC) Number. Now I want to surrender it.I have asked to some Service Tax officials. According to them, I have to first apply for Conversion of Old Service Tax Code(STC) Number into PAN based Number. Then I have to obtain User-ID & Password. Only after that I can surrender it online.
Please suggest me the correct process for surrender the Service Tax Number.

14 October 2011 You have to follow the above procedure.

You first file ST-1 along with copy of original rc of service tax registration and obtain PAN based service tax number and then apply for surrender of ST number in the manner said to you by Service tax official.
