whether study mat is a must read for students . or reference book is sufficient.

Study mat is always important but for theroy papers more relevant and selected reference books are relavant. Still, Nothing is sufficient.

ICAI can surprise you by asking questions from the topic covered in study mat. only. If you are talking abt. PCC/IPCC level then it is very good for subjects like Auditing, IT & SM. But people rarely use them for subjects like A/c's, Cost-FM or even taxation. So you have to make balance b/w both of them.
