As per recent ruling there is no need to file service tax return if there is nil service tax to be paid.

Basically it is court judgement, but my suggestion to file the same to avoid notice from the department

even if notice is received then relying on the said judgement no return should be filed and moreover there are many assessee facing the same situation so in this regard dept will soon issue circular for non filling of return.

Dear Mr. Tushar Sampat, I giving my suggestion only to avoid all these communication with department
Also some times we left out because of nil return after that we found some services during that period, then we need to file as belated return and inviting penalty all, incase we filed earlier Nil return, then we can revise with normal return without getting penalty clause and also there is no charge to file nil return as well.

Dear Mr. Ramesh Krishnan,I am also giving my suggestion so that the querist is in a better position to decide whether he wants to file st-3 or not.
