Service tax on freight

20 December 2013 Dear Sir

We are a sole proprietorship concern falling under purview of Income Tax Audit.

We pay freight to various transporters for carriage inward([purchase of trading goods]

Some of them are individual truck owners and some are organised transport entities.

Is Service tax payable by us?

We do not have Service Tax Registration Number ? Please suggest us what course of action be taken?

20 December 2013 In case of Good Transport Service reverse charge has not applicable on a Proprietorship concern. So there is no liability on you to take registration and pay the service tax on GTA Services.
for further clarification you may take help from notification No. 30/2012-ST Dated 20-06-2012.
