is there any difference between renting a cab and hiring a cab in respect of service tax.

Yes there is difference between both.
Renting a Cab, refers to giving out a cab on rent by the owner of the cab.
However hiring a cab is a different case, as it refers to taking a cab on rent from other person.
For exp. Taking a cab on rent from other person and renting it out for rate difference.
