20 July 2025 Your query is regarding CA Final Registration, especially with respect to old syllabus vs. new syllabus and eligibility based on timing. Here's a clear and structured answer:

✅ Your Attempt: May 2017

⏳ Question: Can you register for CA Final (old syllabus) just 9 months before the attempt?
📌 CA Final Registration Rules (as per old scheme — relevant to 2015–17 period):
Eligibility to Register for CA Final:
After passing both groups of IPCC or PCC.
After completing ITT & Orientation Course.
After registering for articleship.
Cut-off Time for Registration:
You must be registered for CA Final at least 6 months prior to the month of the exam.
So for May 2017 attempt, last date to register would be October 31, 2016.
Old Syllabus Validity:
Back then, ICAI was in the process of transitioning to the revised syllabus (launched in 2017).
Students registered before a cut-off date (e.g., June 30, 2017) could continue under the old syllabus for a certain number of attempts.
🗓 So in your case:
If you registered for CA Final before October 31, 2016, you would be:
Eligible for May 2017 attempt.
Under old syllabus (if the new syllabus wasn't mandatory yet).
🔄 Old Syllabus vs. New Syllabus – Which to Choose?

Since your attempt was in May 2017, and assuming you were registering in 2015–16, here are the key considerations:

Criteria Old Syllabus New Syllabus
Familiarity More study material, coaching available New topics, less coaching at the start
Paper pattern More known New pattern, more conceptual papers
Transition risk Can be continued for few more attempts Would eventually be mandatory for new students
Suggestion If eligible, old syllabus was safer for May 2017 Only choose new if you had enough time to adapt
✅ Final Advice:

Register for CA Final before October 31, 2016, to be eligible for May 2017 attempt.
If your registration was done before ICAI enforced the new syllabus cut-off, you could choose the old syllabus.
If new syllabus was mandated before your registration, you'd have to go with that.
