28 February 2023 Dear Sir
as per the requirement, we have to obtain an MSME certificate from the creditors, so kindly explain how we know from which creditors should we get the certificate or not.

Kindly explain the query regarding Audit purpose only.

10 July 2024 Obtaining an MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) certificate from creditors is often required for audit purposes, especially to comply with reporting requirements related to outstanding dues to MSMEs. Here’s how you can determine which creditors you need to approach for the certificate and the general process involved:

### Determining Which Creditors Need MSME Certificate:

1. **Definition of MSME:**
- According to the MSME Act, 2006 (revised in 2021), a micro, small, or medium enterprise is defined based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment for manufacturing or services activities, or turnover criteria.

2. **Applicability for MSME Certificate:**
- You need to obtain an MSME certificate from creditors who qualify as MSMEs under the criteria mentioned above.
- Generally, MSMEs are entities that have been registered under the MSME Act and have a Udyam Registration Number (URN).

3. **Identification of MSME Creditors:**
- Review your creditors' list to identify those who are likely to qualify as MSMEs based on their business activities, turnover, or investment in plant and machinery.
- MSMEs often include smaller suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers.

### Process for Obtaining MSME Certificate:

1. **Request for Certificate:**
- Reach out to each creditor identified as an MSME and request them to provide you with their MSME certificate.
- This certificate typically includes details such as their MSME registration number, date of issue, and validity period.

2. **Validity Period:**
- The MSME certificate is generally valid for a specific period, usually one year from the date of issue.
- For audit purposes, ensure that the certificate you obtain is current and covers the period relevant to your audit.

3. **Annual Renewal (if applicable):**
- If the MSME certificate expires during the financial year, you may need to obtain a renewed certificate from the creditor.
- Some creditors may automatically provide updated certificates annually or upon renewal of their MSME registration.

### Importance for Audit Purposes:

- **Compliance Requirement:** Auditors often verify outstanding dues to MSMEs and require evidence such as MSME certificates to confirm compliance with reporting requirements.

- **Documentation:** Maintain a record of all MSME certificates obtained from creditors as part of your audit trail. This helps demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements during audit inspections.

### Conclusion:

Obtaining MSME certificates from creditors is crucial for audit purposes to ensure compliance with reporting requirements related to dues payable to MSMEs. Identify and approach creditors who qualify as MSMEs, request their MSME certificates, and ensure the certificates are current and valid for the audit period. This process helps streamline audit procedures and ensures transparency in financial reporting.
