Hi
Any director possessing professional qualifications and do not have any pecuniary interest in the company are called as "Professional Directors". In big size companies, sometimes the Board appoints professionals of different fields as directors to utilise their expertise in the management of the company.
The Role and responsibility and role of such director are same as ordinary directors. You can also check his terms of appointment in this reference.

According to me there are no such special rights or responsibilities given to such professional director.
He is like other director. This is just a category.
