If your parent has passed away with only an unregistered will and no legal heir certificate, filing their Income Tax Return (ITR) can be complex. While the IT department may authorise someone without a certificate, registration on the e-filing site as a legal representative is typically required. Several documents, including a court-issued certificate, a certificate from local revenue authorities, a registered will, or even a notary-attested affidavit, can serve as proof of heirship.
