Income tax notice - non filing of it return

07 March 2016 Hello Please guide me on the below issue its very urgent.

My aunt received Income Tax Notice for Non filing of IT Return AY 14-15.
The problem is that my aunt has 2 pan nos. ( To correct name, By instead of correction form she applied for new pan). here I state with old pan & new pan.

She has already filed the return on second pan. The notice is issued for the old pan. (return not file for old pan)

As we all aware that one cannot hold more than 1 pan no & is liable for penalty of Rs.10000/-..
She dont want to make payment Rs.10000/-

Please suggest remedy.
What if I cancel the old pan?

07 March 2016 yes,surrender PAN which you are not using

08 March 2016 Since the notice is for older pan, write a letter in reply to the said notice that the same is under the process of cancellation. Also inform that the return has been filed under new pan.
