I have to inform you that I have a PAN CARD. I am a book publisher and my company is a Proprietorship Firm. Recently I am applying for ISBN to Ministry of Human Resource Development, and they rejected my application two times for the reason “The applicant has not attached PAN card of his publishing agency” though I submitted copy of my own pan card with the application.
So could you please inform me can I have pan card in the name of my company though it is a proprietorship firm? If not then it will be helpful if you can give me any govt. website link or something like that which can I show to them. Request you kindly look into the matter.

In India, a PAN (Permanent Account Number) is issued to individuals, firms, and other entities for the purpose of tax identification. For a proprietorship firm, which is not a separate legal entity from its owner, the PAN card is typically issued in the name of the proprietor (the individual owner) rather than the firm itself. However, the PAN card can be used to represent the proprietorship firm in various dealings.
Here’s how you can address the situation where you need to provide PAN details for your proprietorship firm:
### **1. Understanding PAN for Proprietorship Firms**
- **Single PAN for Proprietorship:** As a proprietorship firm is not a separate legal entity from the individual owner, the firm uses the proprietor’s PAN. The PAN card you have is valid for both personal and business purposes. - **Business Transactions:** For business transactions and official purposes, you can use your personal PAN card as the identification for your proprietorship firm.
### **2. Addressing ISBN Application Issue**
- **Submit PAN Card Copy:** You should submit a copy of your personal PAN card along with the application for ISBN, indicating that it is the PAN for your proprietorship firm. Since the proprietorship does not have a separate PAN, the personal PAN is used for the firm. - **Provide a Letter:** If required, you can provide a letter or declaration stating that the PAN card is in the name of the proprietor and is used for the business.
### **3. Government Website and Documentation**
- **Confirming PAN Details:** To confirm that a proprietorship firm uses the proprietor’s PAN, you can refer to official sources or guidelines from the Income Tax Department. Unfortunately, there isn’t a specific PAN card issued in the name of a proprietorship firm. Instead, the proprietor’s PAN card is used. - **Links and Documentation:** Here are some useful links and documents that may help in providing the necessary information to the ISBN authority: - [Income Tax PAN Services](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/) - [Guidelines for PAN Application](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/pan.html)
### **4. If ISBN Authority Requires Further Confirmation**
- **Provide Additional Information:** If the ISBN authority is still concerned, provide them with the following: - A letter from you stating that the PAN card provided is the PAN for the proprietorship firm. - Any official communication or document from the Income Tax Department indicating the use of the proprietor's PAN for business purposes.
### **5. Steps to Take**
1. **Check the Application Requirements:** Ensure that the ISBN application guidelines do not require a separate PAN for the business entity. If so, clarify the requirements with the ISBN office. 2. **Submit the PAN Card:** Provide a copy of your PAN card along with a letter explaining that it is used for both personal and business purposes. 3. **Contact the ISBN Office:** If needed, contact the ISBN office directly to explain the situation and seek their guidance on how to proceed.
### **Summary**
For a proprietorship firm, you use the personal PAN card of the proprietor for all business-related purposes. Ensure you provide a copy of this PAN card and any necessary documentation or letters explaining its use for the business when applying for ISBN or similar registrations. If needed, refer to official guidelines from the Income Tax Department or contact the relevant authorities for further assistance.
