if a fixed deposit is withdrawn before the maturity date, does the bank charge any penalty? if yes, what is the amount/rate of the penalty ?

Fixed deposit breakage charges will be depends on bank to bank as per their internal rules and regulations

This varies from Bank to Bank. Some bank do not deduct premature penalty. Generally premature penalty if any is within the range of 1%.
