05 July 2015 Friends, my IT reforms for AY 2014-15 has been duly assessed and have obtained refund too. However I did not claim exemption under section 80D since I did not have the necessary document to support this. Now that I have this, is it possible to revise the returns filed earlier to claim this exemption now? If yes, can this be done online or offline? Would appreciate experts view on this.

05 July 2015 If you have filed the return within the due date you can revise the return. It can be done online provided your earlier return is online.

05 July 2015 The original returns were filed within the due date and on-line. Since the assessment is completed, will system allow me to modify it? Can you let me know under which section the revised return can be filed?

05 July 2015 you will revise under 139(5)....when you say assessment has been completed, you mean 143(1) intimation has been issued, which in reality is not completion of assessment for the purpose of revising the return.

05 July 2015 Dear Nikhil, I did receive intimation under sec 143 (1) and refund of small amount too. Does this mean that assessment was not final but intermediate or temporary?

05 July 2015 actually 143(1) is merely an intimation. you can very much file the revised return even after issue of 143(1) intimation
