my dad expired in dec 2011 .post his demise i found (through 26AS) that he had not filed returns for last 3 AYs .and hence hes not received any refund .Is it possible to file his return now and claim the refunds ? for how many years can it be done ?

You can file the return for AY 11-12 and AY 12-13 only.
The returns for the earlier period CANNOT be filed as the same have become time barred.

You can represent your father for income tax matters as 'Legal Heir'. But you should restrict yourself to file returns for the year ending 31.3.2012.
