Fee refund rules after term commencement

This query is : Resolved

24 September 2012 Hi Team

Please can anyone guide/advise me in the below matter.

I had taken admission in S.N.D.T law college santacruz on 31-07-2012 i.e
on the last day of admissions. So, the term commenced immediately on the very next day i.e.1-08-2012.

Due to some reason I had to cancel my admission so I called up the college office number on 4aug (within 4 days period) & informed them. I was told to come on 6-08-2012-monday and submit an application for cancellation. On 6 aug, I did as i was i told and submitted an application for cancellation and requested for the refund of fee paid rs.18665/-.
Much to my surprise, i was informed that i would only get a refund of rs.1600 out of total of rs.18,665 as per the prospectus line "No refund of fees after term commences".
I tried a lot to convince them that in my case it was just not possible to comply with the requirement of cancellation before term commences as i took admission on the last day and term got commenced the very immediate next day.

However, all my request n pleadings have fallen on their deaf ears:-( n they have only refunded 1600 to me.

Please can of the experts out here advise me of any remedy available to me. Look forward to your advise/guidance in this matter.

Thanks and Regards
Jagjeet

Please can anyone advise / guide on the above query.

Thanks and Regards

24 July 2024 I understand your situation regarding the refund of fees after cancelling your admission at S.N.D.T Law College. It seems you took admission on the last day of admissions and then immediately cancelled it the next day due to unforeseen circumstances.

Here are some steps you could consider to seek a remedy:

1. **Review College Policies:** Review the college's prospectus or admission guidelines thoroughly. Look for any clauses that specifically mention the terms and conditions for fee refunds and cancellations. Pay particular attention to any clauses that mention exceptions or special circumstances that might allow for a full or partial refund.

2. **Write an Appeal Letter:** Draft a formal appeal letter addressed to the Principal or the Administrator of the college. In the letter, explain your situation clearly and politely request reconsideration of the refund amount. Mention that you took admission on the last day of admissions and immediately cancelled the next day, which did not give you the opportunity to cancel before the term commenced.

3. **Documentary Evidence:** Gather any supporting documents that can substantiate your claim. This could include:
- Admission receipt or proof of payment of fees.
- Copy of your application for cancellation and any correspondence with the college.
- Any medical or personal emergency documentation if applicable.

4. **Seek a Meeting:** Request a personal meeting with the college administrator or authority responsible for fee refunds. Sometimes a face-to-face meeting can help convey your situation more effectively than written correspondence.

5. **Legal Options:** If the college refuses to reconsider or if you believe they are not following their own policies fairly, you may consider seeking legal advice. A lawyer specializing in education law or consumer rights may provide guidance on whether you have legal grounds to challenge the college's decision.

6. **Consumer Protection Agencies:** In some countries, there are consumer protection agencies or ombudsmen who handle complaints related to educational institutions. They may be able to provide mediation or further assistance.

It's important to remain persistent but respectful in your communications with the college. Clearly outline your case, provide any relevant documentation, and be prepared to discuss your situation calmly and professionally.

If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
