Failure to reply against notice u/s 142(1)

Sir,
Our client has received two notices u/s 142(1), but we haven't take any action for it uptill now as we can't prepare documents as required in questionnaire for such hearing.
Now, we are going to take permission for adjournment. Kindly tell me can there be any penalty levied for it for not attending the hearing ?

it is open for AO to levy penalty for non-submission. even if your complete submission are not ready, it is advisable that in the next hearing you make partial submissions and seek time for remaining submissions. Also within the same submission express apology for not attending the earlier hearing alongwith acceptable justification.

Seek adjournment on the ground that preparing details in the questionnaire needs more time. At the next hearing submit all the details called for.
Ps:- Failure to comply attracts penalty u/s 271(1)(b) ranging from 1,000 to 25,000.
