what is the difference between works contract and contract? pls give an answer with proper explanation pls. basically, how could we differentiate b/w a contract & a works contract?

Works contract is a subset of contract. In otherwords just as there can be sales contract, Transports contract etc, works contract is also one type of contract.
Works contract is nothing but a person contracting to do a job entrusted with him by another
