if i received cheque dated 30/9/2010 and entered the same in books at same day but cheque cleared in bank 2/10/2010 for which month liability to pay service tax arise whether for september or october?

Service tax on receipt basis so you are liable to pay service tax in september.

Date of deposit of cheque in the bank would be taken as date of receipt of payment towards services subject to the realisation of the cheque.

Entries as per your books of account are considered by the service tax authorities, the liability arises for september itself. Payable by Oct 5
