Date of effect of amendments

Dear sir/madam
The amendments made in the income tax act are from with effect from some date. Now say an amendment is w.e.f 01.04.12. Does it mean that it is in effect from assessment year starting from 01.04.12 or previous year starting from 01.04.12?

It is for the assessment year starting from 1-4-2012. AY 2012-13.

If the date is 1-6-2012... it is effective from the particular date of 1-6-2012.
