Can we claim 50% mediclaim premium which was for two year 80

23 February 2017 Sir,

I’ve paid the Medical Insurance premium for 2 years and availed the policy in the month of March 2015.
Period of policy – March 2015 to March, 2017,
Premium – 11,171/-.

Last year, I have taken the benefit of Nill.

Will I be in a position to claim this year the Total Amount

23 February 2017 Dear Venkata Narayan Dabburi,

You should have claimed this deduction in the return of income filed for the AY 2015-16 only, as the Section 80D provides for deduction on the basis of year of payment and not based on the validity of the policy. Claim of half of the amount in AY 2016-17 or AY 2017-18 is not permissible as per the wordings of the said section.

Now, you have ommitted to claim this deduction in AY 2015-16. Therefore, if you are serious on claiming this deduction, you may file revised return for AY 2015-16 claiming this deduction. However, please note- you can not file revised return if you did not file original returns within due date.
