can anyone tell me whether a shareholder can demand a copy of list of shareholder from the company?

Yes.
A shareholder can demand list of shareholder from the company.
Further List of Director and shareholders is to be uploaded by the company along with Annual return in form 20B. You may go for online inspection of the company at www.mca.gov.in and download form 20B of last year. In form 20B you will find list of shareholder.
I would suggest u to take the help of professional for online inspection. Fees for online inspection is Rs. 100/-. During online inspection you can download all the uploaded docs of the Company.
