Wrong pan quoted-penalty to be paid or not ?

one of our client has filed income tax return for a.y. 2010-11 in june 11. he received notice from the income tax dept that PAN quoted was invalid. this happned by mistake. he was asked to appear before the INcome tax officer on or before 26/11/2011. he came to me in december 2011 &showed the notice.
is their any way in which penalty could be avoided.

simply draft a letter stating that wrong PAN was quoted inadvertently and state correct PAN attach copy of PAN card

this notice is issued u/s 272a. you have to write in your submission that there was no intention to quate wrong pan.

Just mention that it was a punching mistake which happened erroneously without any malafide intention on the part of assessee.
