What is tallysav.dat file in tally accounting software

This query is : Resolved

25 July 2013 What is the function of tallysav.dat file in Tally ? I am trying to copy a few Sub-Folders ,( for e.g. Folder named 0001 , 0002 , etc ) from One Data Folder to Another . However , the folder to which I have to copy the sub-folders contains a file called "tallysav.dat" . The file icon of this file is like the icons of files on a p.c. which cannot be opened by any application installed on the p.c. Why is this so ?
Can I just simply ignore the existence of this file in the destination folder & go ahead with my Task of copying the sub-folders (0001 , 0002 , etc ?

29 July 2013 For copying data, you need to copy entire folder., only copying some of the sub folder wont work

15 August 2013 I think Mr. Krishnan has not understood my Question correctly .

Anyway ,basically , I just wanted to know what this file called "tallysav.dat" is really for & is it fine if it is deleted ?

03 August 2025 Hey! Here’s a clear explanation about the tallysav.dat file in Tally:

What is tallysav.dat in Tally?
tallysav.dat is a system file used by Tally accounting software to manage the data folder.

It acts as an index or control file that helps Tally keep track of the companies (data folders) stored in that particular directory.

This file contains information about the data path, company names, and their statuses.

It is not meant to be opened or edited manually by users, which is why no application recognizes it.

Can you ignore or delete tallysav.dat?
Do NOT delete the tallysav.dat file as it is essential for Tally to read the company data correctly.

Deleting it may lead to Tally not recognizing the data folders or showing errors when opening company files.

When copying data, it’s best to copy the entire folder (including tallysav.dat) rather than copying only some subfolders.

Best practice for copying data:
Copy the entire data folder to ensure the tallysav.dat file and all company subfolders are intact.

If you want to move or backup data, always include tallysav.dat along with the subfolders (0001, 0002, etc.).

Avoid manual editing or deleting of tallysav.dat to prevent data access issues.
