25 February 2012 Hi,

1. Can you please suggest a book or a website where we could find the rates of tax relating to Works contracts in different states in India??.

2. Can anyone let me know the work contract rates in Andhra Pradesh, UttarPradesh, Maharastra and Haryana?? and whether as a service receiver do we need to get us registered in the respective states? What are the timelines for depositing the tax deducted in the respective states and the assessment timelines?

Each state is maintaining a web site giving details of VAT Act,rules including schedules of tax levy at different rates.Only in few states works contract receipts are charged at common rates(like Karnataka). In most of the states the value of different goods included in a works contract are charged VAT at their respective rates.You refer to those schedules in each state and know the details.
A firm doing only sevice and no sales need not register under any VAT ACt in India.Generally, within next 20 days after the end of a month VAT is to be deposited with a return.....MJK
