20 August 2026 Sir, my annual income is below ₹2.5 lakh, and I have been unemployed for the past two years with no current source of income. I am currently managing my monthly credit card payments of around ₹35,000 with the help of my relatives and some of my old savings.

Now, I want to stop filing my ITR because, due to my ITR filing, my entire family’s ration card has been discontinued, and I have also been removed from other government schemes, even though I currently have no income.

Therefore, I would like to know whether I can stop filing my ITR permanently. Could this cause me any problems?

20 August 2026 Option to Stop Filing: He can safely stop filing ITR permanently as long as his total income remains below the basic exemption limit and he does not trigger any of the mandatory filing criteria under the 7th Proviso of Section 139(1).

No Penalty: There is no penalty or legal issue for not filing an ITR if the individual is not required by law to file one.

Record Keeping: Retain basic evidence showing that credit card payments were funded via family assistance and past savings.
