sales tax VS. VAT

plz tell me the basic differences between VAT and Sales tax. if rate of sales tax is lesser than VAT then is it beneficial to purchase goods from other states? how VAT and SAles tax differs practically. thanks

Sales tax and vat are same things upto 31.3.2005 there is local sales tax and w.e f 1.4.2005 local sales tax is converted into VAT.There is on different thing Central Sales Tsx and it is applicable in case of sales from one state to another and such case VAT/ Sales tax is not applicable. Therefore rate of tax differee does not any difference
