Received notice from IT Dept u/s 142(1) for A Y 11-12 asking me to file return of income. However, the return is time barred.
How can the return be filed now ?

If the noticed received u/s 142(1) requiring filing of return of income then such return is valid and not time barred and same rights came as the return filed u/s 139(1).
So now you shall file your return of income u/s142(1) with in the time given in that notice.
When ever you receive the notice u/s142(1) even though 139(4) time limit expired the return is not time barred.But return should be file u/s 142(1).
