Overright of invoice

We had received short material against a invoice. suppose invoice is for Rs.5000/- and material received is for Rs. 4900/- .
Can we directly overright the original invoice for Rs. 4900/- and book the invoice? what is the treatment or accounting rule?

better to give credit to party for ful amount, and then pass a debit note for short receipt
