pan means permanent account number. It is mandatory for all who are an assessee under income tax act. As per act whenever we have to communicate with the i.t. Department it is necessary to mention on docs.

further for entering into any high value transaction pan is also necessary, if u want to buy share or debenture etc. for more than rs. Fifty thousand it is also mandatory.
