This discussion explores the possibility of claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) when renting from your mother, who lives in a non-metro city. Key questions include whether this arrangement is permissible, if a formal rent agreement is necessary, and if owning a commercial property in your name prevents HRA claims. The consensus is that while renting from a parent might be possible, a rent agreement is likely required, and owning a commercial property generally disqualifies you from claiming HRA.
