18 March 2011 Dear Sir,
An employees gives HRA agreement as Rs. 5000/- per month break up is (rent+maintainance+electricity bill as Rs.4000+500+500) and also give receipt of Rs. 5000 per month.

As an employees should I give HRA exemption based Rs. 5000 per month or only rent amount i.e Rs. 4000 per month or some other combinations.

Please guide

19 March 2011 That means Maintainance charges will also not be eligible for HRA exemptions

20 March 2011 yes agreed, only 4000 is eligible....
if your rent agreement is for 5000 and in agreement if landlord doesn't indicate the breakup of maintanance or electricity charges and if its your mutual understanding then you can claim 5000 as rent paid.
