Filing of earlier years returns

Please advice me

my client needs to file his returns from the AY 2007-08 onwards.

whether is it possible to file now

if yes under which provisons he can file his returns.

what is the time limit for filing his returns?

30 March 2012 Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act deals with revised returns.

The time limit for filing revised return is 1 year from the end of the Assessment Year or completion of assessment, whichever is earlier.

Accordingly, you can file revised returns for the following years:

AY 10-11 - till 31.03.2012
AY 11-12 - till 31.03.2013

Returns for AY 07-08, AY 08-09 and AY 09-10 CANNOT be revised.

30 March 2012 a/y 2010-11 & a/y 2011-2012 is possible to file income tax returns

if your income tax range/ward officer accepts A/Y 2009-10 can also be filed if it is refund no refund can be passed

31 March 2012 Mr phani raja is not correct. The ITO has to accept the returns for earlier years. All the years are belated returns and to be lodged by the dept once the same are duly filed. Hence you can file the returns from 2007-08 onwards but no refund is possible as the same would be lodged by the ITO. Go a head. Ganeshan

31 March 2012 As per my recent experience which I would like to share, same like Anil I had to file return for last three Ass. years 2011-12, 2010-11 & 2009-10. But I was able to file only first two Ass. years returns, the third return (i.e. A.Y. 2009-10) was neither online accepted nor in hard copy.
So, we are waiting for notice u/s 148 to file return for past year.

If there is way out please, also, let me know..

but in my practical experience i had filed the a/y 09-10 return on 30-03-2012 and it will be lodged i had it acknowledgement also

actually online return is also not acceptable
