could anyone tell me who a depository participant is and how is he different from a stock broker ?

In indian security system there are 2 depository.
1. National Securities depository limited (NSDL)
2. Central Depository securities.limited (CDSL)
All the shares are with these 2 depositories. There are othere DP in diff. cities/places holding connectivity with NSDL and CDSL.
For example there are various SBI/HDFC bank branches connected with their head office.
