16 January 2009 we have paid the service tax for the period of Dec 07 to July 08 on 1/08/08. what will be our penalty

17 January 2009 service is for Manpower recruitment, amt is near about Rs 20000/- which we have paid including intt.

Reason was that our previous accountant doesn't know about the payment dates and at the time of payment we didnt knw that late payment for even single day attracts penalty.

19 January 2009 If u are covered under the quarterly payment scheme ( if u are an Individual, partnership firm or proprietary firm etc.)
Then tax is payable on the 5th of following quarter.
Interest is mendatory.Penalty @ 200/- per day is also mendatory.
It seems u are covered under quarterly payment scheme, therefore payments received in Dec. pay by 5th Jan for Jan to March - pay by 5th April and for Aprl to June pay by 5th Aug.
