This query is : Resolved

06 July 2018 I HAVE NO MEDICLAIM POLICY FOR MYSELF OR MY FAMILY BUT IN FY 2017-18, I INCURRED 27000 ON THE MEDICAL TREATMENT OF MY MOTHER ( 82 YEARS ) . CAN I CLAIM THIS AMOUNT AS DEDUCTION U/S 80D IN MY INCOME TAX RETURN. ( MY MOTHER IS NOT AN INCOME TAX ASSESSEE )

06 July 2018 Yes, where such expenses is towards medical expenditure of very senior citizen not covered by health insurance, deduction is allowed up to a limit of Rs 30,000.

07 July 2018 Thank you sir for your reply. But there is a confusion whether the super senior citizen i.e. my mother can claim such deduction in her own return OR can I also claim it in my return for medical expenses incurred on her who is dependent on me ?? Please clarify

07 July 2018 Since you paid, you are the person to claim 80D.
