how the market opens with a gap?

Dear fellow CAclub members,
while I have been reading about stock market movement in a day, i come across the term "the market opened with a positive/negative gap of --- points. What exactly meant by this? The dealers can order only after the market opens, then what determines the above mentioned gap?
Hope I am clear in my question.

What is Circuit Breaker?

What is meant by circuit breaker? Just observe the following sentence where this phrase is used?

"If you are an investor in the stock market, the happenings of the last few days must have caused a lot of concern. Remember the black Tuesday of January 22 when the market plummeted by more than 11 per cent during the first few minutes of trade. Nervous sellers pushed the panic trigger, sending the markets into a free fall, until it hit the CIRCUIT BREAKER, which automatically caused all trading to come to a halt, both, at the BSE and NSE."

is company now issuing preference shares?

HI experts,
I assume that the companies going for IPO's are issuing equity shares. Is there any company issuing preference shares? Any company's preference share is now listed in the exchange?

Speculative Transaction

Please distinguish b/w speculative and non- speculative transaction or give link where the diff is stated.
Also, what is the nature of the transactions by the traders who buy and sell on a daily basis?

mutual funds

The price band for the sale price and repurchase price as per SEBI Regulations 1996 is as follows where,
a) sale price should not be higher than 107% of NAV,
b)repurchase price should not be lower than 93% of NAV, and
c)difference between sale price and repurchase price calculated on sale price should not exceed 7%.

Is there any change in this rule???
