Hi,
I received a notice from IT for my client under section 142(1) FOR AY 2010-11 asking to furnish a big list of details . after submitting the particulars i have again received notice from department posting and hearing date and with a warning that if case not represented assessment would de done under section 144. can this assessment be completed under section 144?

Yes it can be done.
If an assessee fails to comply with all terms of a notice issued u/s 142(1)(I) or 142(1)(II) then the AO, after taking all the relavant material which he has gathered, shall make an assessment u/s 144.

144 can be invoked in case of non-cooperation by assessee !
