Anand, a practicing chartered accountant, provides taxable audit services. He has started his practice in the mid year of 2008. He wants to file the service tax return first time. Whether 19 the records including computerized data maintained by him shall be acceptable by the department? For how long such records shall be preserved by him?

The records including computerizd data which are being maintained by an assessee on his own or as required under any other law in force, such as income tax, sales tax, etc., are acceptable for the purpose of service tax.
Ref:- rule 5(1) of STR,1994.
All records and documents concerning any taxable service,CENVAT transactions etc., must be preserved for a minimum period of five years immediately after the financial year to which such records pertain.
