If you are taking a loan from the bank and gives a security (anything) as collateral, the the loan is said to be guaranteed under lien by way of property.
When we talk about lien, we normally refer to giving security other than land and building (which is usually called mortgage). For e.g. FD receipts, Shares, etc when given as security.
