Is it necessary to file return after receiving PAN

29 November 2007 My friend is from Assam having a salary below Rs. 3000. He wants a PAN card as he does not have any proof of his staying in Mumbai. If after receiving PAN is it compulsory to file return

29 November 2007 ONLY WHEN ONE HAS THE TAXABLE INCOME EXCEEDING THE EXEMPTION LIMIT , ONE HAS TO FILE INCOME TAX RETURN OR IF ONE HAS A REFUND OF IT DUE , ONE HAS TO FILE AN IT RETURN AND CLAIM REFUND.
BUT THERE IS NO NEED TO FILE IT RETURN SIMPLY BECAUSE ONE GOT PAN.
GOVT. HAS EVEN REMOVED THE 1/6 CRITERION ( EARLER IN EXISTENCE TO FILE RETURN IF ONE HAS EITHER A CLUB MEM. SHIP OR A CREDIT CARD ETC...) TO FILE IT RETURN.
