what is the difference between simple imprisonment and rigorous imprisonment??

Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by interpretation means hard labour. Hard labour is not defined in the Indian Penal Code. RI as a form of punishment started off in the British era, when it meant breaking rocks and making roads.
