18 January 2025 The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to individuals and businesses involved in import and export activities in India. The IEC plays a vital role in facilitating smooth international trade transactions. Once an entity obtains an IEC, it becomes essential to understand the IEC Status at Customs, which is often referred to as the BIN (Business Identification Number).
The IEC Status at Customs, commonly known as BIN, is an essential element for all importers and exporters in India. BIN is a 10-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each IEC holder. This unique code is used by customs authorities to monitor and track import and export shipments processed by the IEC holder. Customs authorities use BIN to assess the risk associated with importers and exporters. It helps in identifying potential threats related to smuggling, money laundering, or other illegal trade practices.
