This discussion addresses how to change the Karta of a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) account when the original Karta has passed away. The user's father-in-law had an HUF with a PAN but no registered deed. As the wife is the sole survivor and heir, she wishes to become the Karta. The advice provided suggests that since there are no other coparceners, the HUF cannot continue and must be dissolved, with assets transferred to the wife. The process for dissolution, even without an original deed, involves applying to the Income Tax Officer (ITO) with reference to the HUF's existing structure.
My Father in law and my Mother in law expired in 2020, my Wife is only child to my in laws.
My Father in law had an HUF, I am not able to trace back any HUF deed for the same (looks lie HUF was not registered), but he has a PAN in name of HUF. He had couple of bank account, FD and MF.
My wife now wishes to continue as Karta for my father in laws HUF as she is the only survivor to the family.
Please suggest what can we do to change my wife to Karta of HUF account and also change Karta in PAN Card.

As there are no more coparceners in HUF, the HUF cannot exist anymore. It has to be dissolved, with the transfer of the existing assets in favor of your wife.
