Respected Sir/Madam,
We have registered in service tax voluntarily. So please tell whether there is any requirement to file return even if our Taxable service is only Rs. 500000? If it is necessary then please tell the whether there is any penalty or interest on delay in filing of return?

Yes filing of returns is compulsory even in case where there is no taxable turnover of service provided. Penalty for late filing is 0 - 15 days Rs. 500/- 16 - 30 days Rs. 1000/- and delay more than 30 days Rs. 1000/- + Rs. 100/- per day of delay subject to maximum of Rs. 20,000/-

Section 70 of Finance Act, 1994 reading with Rule 7 of Service Tax Rules, 1994 mandates every service tax payer to file half yearly return within 25 days.
Powers are granted to Superintendant that can reduce the amount of penalty in case of NIL returns but only on satisfaction of genuine reasons. However, what is genuine or reasonable ground is subject matter of dispute.

Sir, Can u please tell the notification no. of service tax abatement relating to taxable services amounting less than Rs. 10 Lakhs. This is required to be written in return otherwise it is getting rejected.
